The Washington Building Congress has awarded Beaubois a Craftsmanship Award in the Woods and Plastics category for the excellence of its work on the construction and renovation of the Montgomery County Judicial Center.
In addition, Beaubois has been nominated for a Star Award, a special recognition for demonstrating the highest level of quality and exceeding the awards criteria to achieve a level of execution that is exceptional.
In fact, Beaubois actually broke into the Maryland market in spectacular fashion by obtaining the largest architectural millwork contract awarded for the Montgomery County Judicial Centre.
Beaubois crafted the judges’ benches, witness and jury boxes, lawyers’ and bailiffs desks and the benches for the public in the building’s 18 courtrooms. Among the special design features of the courtrooms are the wood panels and the copper-clad panels installed by Beaubois are among the special design features of the courtrooms. The heavy, 10-foot-long copper-clad panels are framed at the top and bottom with strips that are two feet wide and cover the walls and ceilings at both ends of the rooms. The combination of African Kaya wood and copper-cladding creates an elegant and textured environment.
Beaubois also enhanced the decor of the 10 judges’ suites with wall panels in the entrance and by installing the furnishings for the washrooms and a small back-up kitchen.
Designed to meet the LEED Gold standard, the building is equipped with energy-saving electromechanical systems and photovoltaic panels that convert light to electricity.
The judicial centre, clad in copper with bronze and brass accents opens onto exterior pillars that provide a warm counterpoint to the glass curtain walls and pre-cast concrete panels. The surface area of the new six-story building measures 191 000 sq. ft.. It lodges the juvenile court and family services such as the Problem-Solving Court, mediation rooms and a children’s play area, something that is rarely found in a courthouse.
The seventh major courthouse project in the history of Maryland, the Montgomery County Judicial Center eloquently testifies to the talent of the Beaubois team.
